OCTOBER FLARE: BEYOND BORDERS
The October issue of Flare features the work of our very own Tony Masciangelo! He did hair and makeup on model, Cailin Hill, for the editorial feature “Beyond Borders”. The idea behind the shoot was to define the international woman through a Canadian lens; no small initiative. Tony: ” To show that Canadian style has vision and relevance on the world stage, I needed to talk the same language as my international peers, like Odile Gilbert and Guido Palau.” The results are raw and heavily textured; there is a big push away from pretty.
With a boundary-pushing mandate, Tony decided to rebel against the perfect locks perpetuated by young Hollywood. Tony: “It does become somewhat dull to see everyone with the same immaculate beach waves. Hey, I know it is pretty and it works for a lot of people, but as I poured through my countless magazine subscriptions, I realized it wasn’t just me feeling fatigued by this look.” Tony is right, the fashion signals have been around us for awhile now; messy is on the mend.
So, how do we get the look? Tony laughs: “As much as it doesn’t look like I really did much to the hair in this shoot, trust me, I sweated it out! Basically this look is all about creating lots of texture in the hair; it is something that you achieve best after several days of not shampooing and using lots of hair spray and dry shampoo in between. As I encountered on the shoot, it is hard to get this look from freshly shampooed hair. I really had to work poor Cailin’s hair over and over to get the end result.”
Conclusion: Since the look is best achieved by doing a really great blow-out and not shampooing for several days, it ultimately means less time spent styling; always a welcome direction in hair. However, you have been warned, one size never fits all. This look also runs the risk of looking dangerously unkept: you do not want to be mistaken for looking “lost”. We recommend that you dress a little more agressively when you want to wear messed up hair; think, a dash of rock-n-roll, we love the antler-style Dandi Maestre necklace featured in Andrew Soule’s photos below.
