A SILVER STORY

Our very own makeover maverick, Tony Masciangelo, strikes again! This time it was for everybody’s favourite, Fashion Friday on Cityline; trust us, this is an inspiring one. Tony recalls, “It was so rewarding to see heart-warming smiles from everyone in the studio after Carol’s makeover; she was glowing.” When he surveyed the audience for a makeover candidate, Carol caught his eye for her distinctly silver hair. “When I saw her I thought: wow, this lady looks beautiful with grey hair, now, she just needs a killer haircut.” And then we began thinking: how refreshing, we need to get wise and celebrate silver more.

There are many brave ladies daring to be their natural selves; one of our favourites is Carmen Dell’Orefice, above. Yes, her outrageously beautiful bone structure gives her license to wear whatever, but we don’t think we would be as smitten with her if she had coloured tresses; she radiates with silver. What about Christine Lagarde’s ‘do? With a chic silver style, the recently appointed CEO of the International Monetary Fund is also shaking up the beauty paradigm for professional women. When it comes to saving the world from the brink of financial disaster, don’t we want our leaders to look wise? Maybe we don’t have to reach for the colour bottle at the the slightest glint of grey, maybe it is okay to be ourselves. Another silver-hair inspiration is bespectacled NewYork fashion icon, Iris Apfel; we love how she accessorizes the grey away.

For those of you brave enough, or those of you just too tired of tinting every four weeks, please remember that the key to beautiful silver hair is a stellar cut that is regularly maintained and always groomed. Just because you have decided to go grey, doesn’t mean you don’t have to make an effort; the time you used to spend with the colourist, should now be spent with a stylist. For the Cityline Makeover, Tony shaped Carol’s super thick hair into a classic pixie cut. “To really make Carol’s silver sparkle, I knew that it had to be cropped really short. To keep this style working for her, she is going to need to need to trim it once a month to keep it from becoming dowdy. I would also recommend atleast one piece of makeup; whether it is lip, cheek or eye, a tiny hint of colour will always help to balance grey.”

If you are nervous at all about giving up on hair colour, beware, the process of getting rid of your previously tinted locks is not an easy one. In most cases, it can take upwards of a year to entirely return to natural. Why put yourself through the agony if you are not 100% committed? Going grey is a mind set; it is about letting go of our age anxieties. Be prepared for raised eyebrows from a few, but know, that most of us are cheering you on. Go grey, all that we ask is that you treat yourself to a great cut.
