People love a makeover story. Witness Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. Or Reese Witherspoon’s bombshell reveal post Ryan Phillippe. Not to mention those incessant reruns of What Not to Wear. Part of the appeal, of course, comes from a covetable new wardrobe – a new collection of designer labels does a body good. But I think that’s only half the story. The other half comes from an attitude adjustment, one that can only be arrived at when you start with your head.

Not only was it a creatively rewarding to style hair for the Giles Deacon show, the event also raised $100,000 for Princess Margaret Hospital. With George C. boutique at the helm, The A-list Toronto fashion-set made “Lunch with George and Margaret” a social priority. Luncheon guests went twitter-crazy for laser-cut tailoring and the swan-headdresses; Tony couldn’t resist trying out the red swan himself in the above photo. We felt honoured when Giles Deacon himself - contender for head of Dior- complimented us on the “undone-pretty hair” we coiffed for 20 models.Thanks to Linda, Rob, Justyna, Steven and Tony for making the show a success!

Post-LG Fashion Week buzz is that model,Frances Coombe, made the fashion-crowd swoon with her Titian tinted mane. Toronto Life has declared her a “rising-star model” and The Kit blogged that she disproved the edict: redheads shouldn’t wear copper makeup. Her colourist, Jed Puznak, weighs in: “Frances’ ivory skin tone compliments copper-hair-colour perfectly!” After walking at Yohji Yamamoto during Spring 2012 Paris fashion week, she dazzled her hometown crowd with appearances at Joe Fresh,Greta Constantine,Arthur Mendonca and Jeremy Laing.

We are spellbound with SPELLBOUND in the November issue of Flare magazine. Tony madly worked his blow-dryer to create lived-in hair on models, Laura Kell (above left) and Gabrielle Lussier (above right). Tony elaborates in fashion-speak : “These looks are all about mixing pristine-pretty with a little bit of the perverse. I wanted the hair to have a Halloween-witchy feel to it”. We are patting ourselves on the back for three fantastic years at The Alcorn. Woooo Hoooo! Here’s to many more in honour of our namesake, George Oscar Alcorn, above; he was a Member of the House of commons from 1900-1908. Alcorn Avenue is a tribute to him and his wife, Sara Jean Leavitt; she is particularly inspiring to us for raising five children and her volunteerism in an era that discouraged woman from being away from home, she makes us proud.

Everybody is always asking us: what is the latest in hair (or what we affectionately call, hair du jour)? For the last few fashion seasons natural styles have prevailed, but suddenly a blast of colour has appeared on the spring 2012 runways- Thakoon and Narcisco Rodriguez both showed lite-brite hair. Ahead of the curve, Tony Masciangelo showed sea-foam green in the September 2011 issue of Flare, above. So, we ask: thumbs up or down?

Our very own makeover maverick, Tony Masciangelo, strikes again! This time it was for everybody’s favourite, Fashion Friday on Cityline; trust us, this is an inspiring one. Tony recalls, “It was so rewarding to see heart-warming smiles from everyone in the studio after Carol’s makeover; she was glowing.” When he surveyed the audience for a makeover candidate, Carol caught his eye for her distinctly silver hair. “When I saw her I thought: wow, this lady looks beautiful with grey hair, now, she just needs a killer haircut.” And then we began thinking: how refreshing, we need to get wise and celebrate silver more.

Why are we blogging about hairstyles from the 2011 Emmys? Because occasionally, someone inspires. This year, Evan Rachel Wood made the red-carpet worth watching with her finger-waved ‘do; the exaggerated waves on her Bowie haircut was a modern twist on old Hollywood glamour.

The October issue of Flare features the work of our very own Tony Masciangelo! He did hair and makeup on model, Cailin Hill, for the editorial feature “Beyond Borders”. The idea behind the shoot was to define the international woman through a Canadian lens; no small initiative. Tony: “To show that Canadian style has vision and relevance on the world stage, I needed to talk the same language as my international peers, like Odile Gilbert and Guido Palau.” The results are raw and heavily textured; there is a big push away from pretty.

So, why has there been a fever-pitch for the fishtail this summer? Mostly, because it is just so plain easy: part the hair in two and pull strands from underneath in a criss-cross style. That’s it! Don’t even worry about being perfect in your technique; you will achieve a softer, more romantic look. We even recommend gently massaging the finished braid to make it look less structured. Wear it over one shoulder, or be dramatic, and pin it up into a headband style; either way it effortless chic.

The September issue of Flare just arrived in the mail and we are getting psyched for fall fashion. In the beauty story “Strictly Speaking”, Tony gives us a breakdown of the most impactful makeup looks of the season.

Here’s what Tony gets up to on set….While doing hair and makeup for the July/11 Flare editorial “Future’s so Bright”, Tony couldn’t resist trying on the Jeremy Scott sunglasses from Gaga’s Paparazzi video. We get him to share more about the shoot and now feel inspired to go high fashion with a high ponytail.
